Q&A’s about art classes
What art the protocols due to COVID?
We will follow Marin County and the CDC recommendations for children.
My child doesn’t really know much about clay, will they feel overwhelmed?
Our pottery classes are taught to scaffold the learning of our students. We will meet a child at their level and have the ability to then work together to accomplish a work of art that they are proud of. We don’t ever compare work from one artist to another, we know every child comes with their own set of knowledge, our goal is to elevate and celebrate them from where they are.
My child has taken wheel throwing lessons before, will they learn new skills?
Absolutely! We will first discuss what they know, will watch how they throw, and we will then introduce appropriate new techniques to build skills. This class will learn throwing, trimming, and glazing.
What techniques will my child learn?
With every week we want your child to walk out of our ceramics class with knowledge in technique, vocabulary, and history. Techniques will include fine art and contemporary applications in clay. We experiment and learn about all things ceramics!
Do the clay and glaze wash out of clothes?
Most generally, yes. However, working on the pottery wheel is very messy and we would recommend dressing in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
What is different about your class vs. art class at school?
Marin Pottery's educational mission is to give children a voice through art-making. No other curriculum allows a child to explore, from the point of the unknown to a point of completion, learning art techniques while working through mistakes and problem solving, resulting in higher self-confidence, awareness, and leadership skills. Our school system, if your school is fortunate enough to have an art class, is built for children to create artwork that can be evaluated taking away the uniqueness art is able to give a child, empowerment over their passions and what is important to them. We are able to hold space for both, art education and individual work.
Studio 4 Art is unique in its teaching approach to all art projects and introduction to art materials. Our curriculum is progressive, child-initiated, and thought-provoking. Studio 4 Art creates and writes all curriculum, training our teachers in our philosophies and procedures. How to teach the whole child and honor each as the individuals they are is a pretty special way of teaching. We provide growth in children through honoring ideas, executing dream designs, guidance through questions to engage problem-solving, build creative thought processes through mistake-making, and celebrate collaboration.
